Sexxx Dreams- Lady GaGa
ARTPOP is disguised as an album about having a good time and just being whatever you feel like being, but so much about it is about the traumas of fame, of self objectification, of the psychological repercussions of being an idol, of trying to connect with your basic human needs but finding it near impossible because you have become an object, an idea, a projection for other people to tell you who you are. And since you cannot escape it because you are now dependent on the fame addiction, you must adapt to it by creating an alternate reality to avoid facing the facts. This is by far her darkest album yet once you understand what the concept is. Disturbing, really.
'Sexxx Dreams' is especially interesting because it seems like a song about, you guessed it, sex dreams. But the morose talking over the singing tells about a girl who got into a fight with her lover and how she wants her friend now, and she is compulsively fantasizing about this friend sexually. “I just want this to be perfect, Because I'm broken” so the whole thing ultimately reads like a nightmare, a sex nightmare. Words like “dirty” “nasty” “trashy” are thrown around sung with equal parts guilt and equal parts glee; “Help me, help- I feel so trashy” which is a much needed commentary on the fact that Gaga is compulsive with sex to a point of it being a crutch, a coping mechanism, a problem beyond lovemaking. This itself isn't a new topic for Gaga, but coming up after an album of apparent sexual liberation (Born This Way) I think that it has offered a more vulnerable and confessional point of view from GaGa, but of course with this comes the fluff and padding and smoke & mirrors distraction to keep a relatively safe distance from her mind and her monsters.
If anything, ARTPOP has succeeded in being a pop album that subtly deals with mental polarities and traumas by escaping to another world, another identity, another facade for every song- and coming to no happy ending catharsis. The point at the end is she now needs your applause, she will die without it. Some songs I still just CANT with (the ones that revert back to her naive Fame days that deal only with superficiality, materialism, designer drugs and fucking Fashion™ that feel more like dumb safety padding for the more aggressive songs) but the few songs that she did nail the concept with took it all the way home.
